06 June 2008 - Larne coach hire operator fined £1,975 for operating coaches illegally

A Larne coach hire operator was fined a total of £1,975 plus £112 costs at Larne Magistrates' Court today for two occasions of operating coaches illegally.

Gordon Blair McBurney trading as McBurney Coaches of Pound Street, Larne was fined for operating a coach on two occasions in contravention of a prohibition notice and also for failing to comply with a number of operator licensing and drivers’ hours requirements. A prohibition notice had been imposed by DOE Inspectors on 30 June 2007 due to the discovery of serious mechanical deficiencies, however, on two occasions thereafter the vehicle was detected operating in contravention of the notice.

The company was convicted of several offences including:

  • Using a vehicle contrary to a prohibition notice
  • Failing to comply with the conditions of a Road Service Licence
  • Failing to furnish all maintenance records to DOE inspectors
  • Failing to ensure the return of tachograph records
  • Failing to keep and produce tachograph records for inspection
  • Failing to make periodic tachograph record checks
