Newtownabbey car breaker fined £500 for waste offences

Wednesday, 12 March 2008

The owner of a car scrap yard at Newtownabbey was convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court yesterday for trading without a waste licence.

James Larkham (59) of Martin Park, Whitehouse, trading as Abbey Car Breakers, was fined £500 for breaches of waste management legislation.

Environment and Heritage Service officers investigated a site at Sanda Road, Newtownabbey, owned by Mr Larkham on 13 and 21November 2007 where an estimated 120 end of life vehicles were observed. These included substantial quantities of controlled wastes. The site did not have a licence to operate as an authorised treatment facility for end of life vehicles.

Mr Larkham pleaded guilty to two charges under the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997. He was fined a total of £500 (with £28 costs) under two counts of Article 4 (1) b and 2 counts of Article 4 (6) of the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997.
