Sammy Wilson says well done to new drivers

Wednesday, 26 November 2008

Environment Minister Sammy Wilson today launched a leaflet reminding newly qualified drivers of their responsibilities on the road.

All learner drivers who pass their driving test are to receive the ‘Well Done’ leaflet.

The user-friendly leaflet not only congratulates them but also underlines the need for newly qualified drivers to act responsibly behind the steering wheel.

The minister said: “It is only right that newly qualified drivers should feel a sense of achievement on passing their test.

“However, it is important they also realise that the lessons they have learnt and the skills they have acquired are for life and are not just for passing the driving test.

“I therefore welcome this leaflet which reminds newly qualified drivers of their responsibilities on the road. It highlights the risks all drivers face and will also remind them of some of the key rules for survival.

“I would urge all new drivers to take the time to read this leaflet and enjoy a lifetime of safe motoring.”

The annual pass rate in Northern Ireland for those taking their practical driving test is just under 30,000.

As well as reminding newly qualified drivers of their responsibilities, the Well Done leaflet spells out the range of penalties for specific road traffic offences and the impact of dangerous behaviour.

Research shows those most at risk on our roads are 17 - 24 year olds. While the leaflet is designed to appeal to this age group, it is very relevant to newly qualified drivers of all ages.
