Armagh fuel company fined £1,500 for pollution
Friday, 19 October 2007Today at Armagh Magistrates' Court, Ozone Friendly Fuels of Carrickcroppan Road, Camlough, Co Armagh was fined £1,500 plus costs, following pollution from an oil recycling plant belonging to the company.
The prosecution followed an investigation on 19 February 2006, carried out by an officer from the Environment and Heritage Service, when the Camlough River was found to be polluted with oil. The pollution was traced to the nearby premises of Ozone Friendly Fuels, where barrels of chemicals and leaking oil pipes were found. An oily discharge was flowing from the premises to a nearby wetland and to the Camlough River. Analysis of samples confirmed that the discharge escaping from the site was highly polluting.
Ozone Friendly Fuels pleaded guilty in court, but legal counsel for the company said in mitigation that the company was a responsible one and had cooperated fully to have the problems repaired.
