Speaking about the opening of the third lane Minister for Regional Development Conor Murphy said: “The opening of the third lane marks a significant milestone in these works, which are now almost complete. The new third lane on the Belfast-bound carriageway will make it easier for traffic to join the M2 at Sandyknowes Junction and will improve journey times on this section of the M2 during the morning peak. The overall M2 Improvements Scheme is currently on target to be completed later this month, some three months ahead of the original programme. ”
The M2 Improvements Scheme, which began in March 2007, has involved widening the Belfast-bound carriageway of the M2 motorway between Sandyknowes and Greencastle junctions, widening the country-bound carriageway of the M2 over Greencastle junction and replacing the Hightown, Collin and Longlands Bridges over the M2.
In preparation for the opening of the third lane, Roy Spiers, of Roads Service said: “Drivers using the road should take extra care until they become familiar with the new road markings. Some minor works remain outstanding, which may require closure of the hard shoulder until all works are complete later in the month. I would like to take this opportunity to thank drivers and all those affected for their patience and co-operation throughout the period of the works.”
