Speaking ahead of this evening’s meeting between Roads Service and Newry and Mourne District Council, the Minister said: “Construction Work on the A1 Beech Hill to Cloghogue dual carriageway scheme is progressing well. It is several months ahead of programme with the construction contractor indicating that they expect to maintain this momentum. Fifteen of the seventeen major structures on the scheme have been completed and work on the remaining two is well advanced.
“Cloghogue flyover junction on the A1 Beech Hill to Cloghogue dual carriageway is expected to be available to traffic in the first week of December, to help accommodate the anticipated increased volume of traffic during the busy Christmas period."
Southern Division’s Strategic Road Improvement Manager Mr Leslie McCullough said: "Good progress has been made on the delivery of local transport and safety measures in the Newry and Mourne area this year. These included road realignment improvements to the A37 Concession Road at Wards Corner, Culloville. Also traffic calming schemes have been introduced on the Scrogg Road, Kilkeel and Doran’s Hill, Newry. An extensive programme of resurfacing and surface dressing has also been completed.
"The financial position for the next two years will depend on decisions made by Executive. However Roads Service is still planning improvement schemes and welcomes comments from Council on its programmes."
