19 May 2009 - Roads Service to Invest £3.2Million in Limavady Area

Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy announced a £3.2million investment for the Limavady area this year.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s meeting between Roads Service and Limavady Borough Council, the Minister said “It is proposed to improve the junction of Broad Road and Ringsend Road with the provision of a full standard right turning facility. As well as improvements to the visibility sight lines at the junction, the Broad Road will also have minor realignment improvements.

“The provision of a footway is also proposed on the Drumsurn Road, Drumsurn between Fir Avenue and Beech Road. The scheme will also significantly improve the sight visibility lines for traffic exiting Beech Road on to Drumsurn Road.”

In addition to the schemes that will be delivered in 2009/10, the Minister also made reference to the development work that was being undertaken on strategic road improvement schemes. He said: “I particularly welcome the recent announcement on the preferred route in relation to the proposed A6 dualling between Derry and Dungiven and the proposed A2 Ballykelly Bypass where an announcement on the preferred route is planned by early 2010.”

Mr Murphy welcomed the road maintenance schemes progressed in the Limavady area last year. He said this year's increased allocation for structural maintenance would allow a larger number of resurfacing schemes to proceed on local roads this financial year.

Road Service’s Principal Engineer, Deidre Mackle, welcomed the planned investment in local transport and safety measures in the Limavady area, which includes traffic calming, collision remedial, pedestrian measures, cycling measures and safer routes to schools.

Roads Service has also been in consultation with local government representatives on matters arising from the Review of Public Administration. These included the details of functions to be transferred to local government in 2011 and the arrangements to allow the new councils to influence roads programmes.

Ms Mackle also highlighted some of the schemes that were completed in 2008/09. She said these included “The Baranailt Road Bridge replacement and carriageway realignment at Drumacarney Bridge, which was nearing completion; the provision of a full right turning lane at the junction of Ballyquin Road and Ballyavelin Road, which included the provision of a new bus lay-by, shelter and footway links to Ardgarvan cottages; the introduction of traffic calming measures, such as junction platforms, speed cushions and flat top road humps at Gortgare, Greysteel; and the introduction of flashing school signs at St. John’s Primary School, Dernaflaw and St Peter’s & St Paul’s, Foreglen under our Speed Management at Rural Schools programme.”
