26 July 2007 - Murphy opens award winning £10million water treatment works

Regional Development Minister, Conor Murphy, today officially opened a new state-of-the-art Carran Hill Water Treatment Works in Crossmaglen, Co.Armagh.

Northern Ireland Water’s (NIW) £10million facility, which has won a number of prestigious awards has a capacity to supply up to 6.8 million litres of water a day and will serve a population of 20,000 from Crossmaglen and the surrounding area.

Speaking at the event,Mr Murphy said: “This facility is just one example of the scale of investment required to improve the water and sewerage infrastructure throughout the region.

“This project has been completed ahead of schedule with the full commitment and support of the local community. This has been recognised in the number of Awards for engineering, environmental awareness and safety excellence the Project has received.

“By 2010 NIW will have invested £174million in water treatment storage and mains improvement. This will help NIW meet European standards, respond to increasing demand and provide the north with a world class modern service.”

Katharine Bryan, Chief Executive of NIW said “This new facility is a wonderful example of NIW and its partners working at its best to provide a quality service to the local community.

“We are very proud of the project team at Carran Hill who have delivered a first class treatment works to the highest standards, implementing high quality engineering and environmental solutions and maintaining excellent relationships with the local community.

“NIW is committed to significant investment in water and wastewater services with Carran Hill providing a benchmark for the quality of future projects. We are delighted the Minister has been able to attend so he can see first hand the commitment of the team and the tremendous positive impact of this project.”

In recognition of its environmental efforts in terms of design, construction and commissioning, the Carran Hill project was recently awarded ‘Excellent’ status in the environmental 2006 Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Awards (CEEQA).

The contract was a joint venture partnership between Earth Tech Engineering Ltd and Farrans (Construction) Ltd.

Carran Hill Water Treatment Works was part funded by the EU Structural Funds Programme to the value of £3.6million.
