12 June 2007 - Flooding report

Widespread flooding has occurred today in many locations particularly in south and east Belfast and Castlereagh due to flash flooding. Other areas affected are Magherafelt, Lisburn, Omagh, Cookstown and Dungannon.

Many properties have been affected, especially in east Belfast. Belfast City Council intend to open a rest centre at Avoniel Leisure centre today.

Emergency procedures have been implemented and staff, contractors and customer services staff have been mobilised by the Rivers Agency, Water Service and Roads Service. Emergency Services and councils are also assisting.

Assistance is being provided by operational staff in all areas, for example:

  • Distribution of sandbags
  • Inspecting and desilting of sewers, gullies and river culverts
  • Replacing and repairing of manhole covers
  • Distributing ‘Advice to Customers who have suffered flooding’ advice leaflets

Many roads in affected areas are closed but most are passable with care. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution.

The Met Office has advised that further heavy rain is expected up until 1900hrs.
