15 June 2007 - Flooding bulletin

Widespread flooding has occurred today in many locations particularly in Belfast (BT6, BT9), Newtownards, Bangor, Comber, Lurgan, Crossgar, Ballynahinch and Downpatrick.

Emergency procedures have been implemented and staff, contractors and customer services staff have been mobilised by the Rivers Agency, Roads Service and Northern Ireland Water.

Across the three organisations around 450 staff have been providing assistance on the ground. Thousands of sandbags have been distributed and pumps and gully emptiers have been deployed. Around 2000 calls for assistance have been received from the public. Emergency Services and councils are also assisting.

Assistance is being provided by operational staff in all areas, for example:

  • Distribution of sandbags
  • Inspecting and desilting of sewers, gullies and river culverts
  • Replacing and repairing of manhole covers
  • Distributing advice to those who have suffered flooding.

Some roads are closed but most are passable with care. Motorists are asked to reduce speed and drive with caution.

The distribution of sandbags is carried out by all agencies. Residents should contact Rivers Agency, NIW, Roads Service or their local council offices.
