15 June 2009 - Roads Service announces resurfacing works on M2 Motorway

Roads Service today announced plans to start resurfacing work on a section of the M2 motorway.

The resurfacing works are on the northbound section between Junction 5 Templepatrick and Junction 6 Rathbeg. The road works will run from 19 to 24 June 2009.

Mark McPeak, Roads Service’s Project Manager said: “These essential works will strengthen this section of the M2 so that it can carry today’s very high traffic volumes, provide good skidding resistance, an even running surface, prevent the formation of surface defects and will reduce road noise thereby improving the safety and comfort of road users.”

The works operations and traffic management arrangements have been carefully programmed to minimise inconvenience to the travelling public, local residents and business, however some disruption will be unavoidable.

Mr McPeak continued: “The work has been scheduled during the summer months to take advantage of the reduced traffic flows and will be restricted to weekend and overnight and working. However, some delays will be inevitable and we would ask that motorists be patient as these essential works progress.”

For safety reasons, it will be essential to close the M2 northbound between Junction 5 and Junction 6 at various times throughout the duration of the works, however, one lane will be kept open during the day at the weekend and two lanes on weekdays.

The full motorway closure details are as follows:

  • Friday 19 June 2009 from 8pm until Saturday 20 June 2009 at 9am.
  • Saturday 20 June 2009 from 7pm until Sunday 21 June 2009 at 12 noon
  • Sunday 21 June 2009 from 6pm until Monday 22 June 2009 at 6am
  • Monday 22 June 2009 from 8pm until Tuesday 23 June 2009 at 6am
  • Tuesday 23 June 2009 from 8pm until Wednesday 24 June 2009 at 6am

During these closures a diversion route will be signposted via: A57 Ballyclare Road, C28 Paradise Walk and B95 Greystone Road.
