Policy for Rathlin Island introduced

Tuesday, 2 March 2010

Conor Murphy, Minister for Regional Development today announced that the Executive has introduced a policy for Rathlin Island.

The Minister said: “Since coming into office, I have been committed to improving island life for the people of Rathlin and have championed the development of an Executive Policy for our only inhabited off shore island.

“It is only right that islanders receive access to public services that the rest of us often take for granted, and the Executives policy will seek to improve the conditions of all people on the island while also protecting its natural and cultural heritage.

“I believe it is vital that we strive to make Rathlin a vibrant, healthy, sustainable community that looks to its future in a positive way. I was particularly struck by the suggestion that a Rathlin brand is established i.e. a green island with a neutral carbon footprint that would expand the use of renewable energy and recyclables, maximise the use of local produce, extend the attractions beyond the puffin season and establish an island of festivals.

“We are not starting with a blank sheet and good work has already been undertaken with Executive colleagues and their departments and local bodies. This policy will build on that collaboration, and my Department will develop an Action Plan to implement the policy over the next two years working closely with other departments and bodies and the islanders. ”

The Minister will chair a Forum that will monitor progress and review and refresh the Action Plan to reflect changing circumstances.
