Smartpass holders urged to check expiry date

Thursday, 3 May 2007

The Department for Regional Development today urged SmartPass holders to check the expiry date on their passes.

With a lifespan of 5 years, the first passes issued are now due for renewal. From April, Senior SmartPasses now enable their holders to travel for free on public transport services throughout the whole island, however they have to be valid.

A DRD spokesperson said: “200,000 passes have been issued since the cards were first issued in 2002. SmartPass holders should check the front of their pass for the expiry date so that passengers are not inconvenienced with an unexpected fare.

“We have made the reissue process as simple as possible. Regular users have been issued with forms that need to be checked, signed and returned to Translink. Less frequent users have been reminded to obtain an application form. Anyone who still has one of these forms or who has received a reminder should act today and send in their application.

“If your SmartPass is due to expire within the next 3 months, and you have not applied for a replacement or have any queries, please call 0845 600 0049.”

Senior citizens make up 99% of free travel concessionaires.

Notes to Editors:

  1. A SmartPass is valid for 5 years and after this time it must be renewed. If a senior citizen is 70 years of age or older, it is very likely that he or she will need to renew their SmartPass soon. The Senior SmartPass must also be current before it can be used as electoral identification at the polling station.
  2. Senior citizens make up 99% of free travel concessionaires. Registered Blind and War Disablement SmartPass holders will also be contacted about the renewal process.
  3. Should a SmartPass holder fail to renew an expired SmartPass, they will be unable to enjoy the benefits of the pass, and will be required to pay full fare on public transport journeys.
