21 May 2007 - Opening of new bridge at Stockman's Lane

Motorists should be aware of traffic management changes on the M1 Belfast due to the opening of a new bridge.

The changes which will happen over the next few weeks are necessary to facilitate the opening of the new city-bound bridge and the demolition of the old country-bound bridge at Stockman’s Lane, Belfast.

The contra-flow on the M1 at Stockman’s Lane Junction is to be switched from the country-bound carriageway onto the newly constructed city-bound carriageway. As part of the new layout, traffic will travel over the new city-bound bridge. This changeover will facilitate the start of works on the replacement of the second bridge.

This change will take effect from Saturday, 26 May.

In order to allow the contractor to set up the new road lay-out the M1 will be reduced to one lane in each direction on Thursday and Friday nights 24 and 25 May from 10pm to 6am.

The demolition of Stockman’s Lane country-bound bridge will be carried out over two weekends, on Saturday 26 May and Sunday 27 May and on Saturday 2 June and Sunday 3 June. Stockman’s Lane roundabout will be closed for these weekends. The closure details are as follows:

Weekend of 26 / 27 May

Traffic will not be able to pass under the bridge during demolition, eg traffic will not be permitted to travel from Stockman's Lane to Kennedy Way. Instead, traffic will be diverted onto the M1 heading country-bound as far as Black's Road junction, where it will exit and rejoin the M1 at the same junction heading back towards Belfast and then exit at Stockman's Lane junction.

Weekend of 2/3 June

Traffic will not be able to pass under the bridge during demolition, eg traffic will not be permitted to travel from Kennedy Way to Stockman's Lane. Instead, traffic will be diverted onto the M1 heading towards Belfast as far as Broadway where it will travel around the roundabout and come back up the M1 heading country-bound and then exit at Stockman's Lane junction.

A signed alternative route will be available for non motorway users.

These works have been scheduled to avoid any disruption to those attending matches in Casement Park, Belfast.
