28 May 2008 - £600,000 scheme on A6 to begin

A major road re-surfacing scheme costing £600,000 on the A6 Glenshane Road, Derry, will start next week.

The project at Altnagelvin Brae, from Millbrook Road to Altnagelvin Hospital entrance, will commence on Monday 2 June and last until the end of August.

The scheme will also include 700 metres of shared footway and cycletrack and upgrading of the traffic signals at the Hospital entrance and Belt Road at a cost of £60,000.

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to traffic by restricting works at peak hours, and by suitable traffic diversions. Difficult sections of the works will be undertaken during July / August when schools are closed and traffic levels are at their lowest. However, there will be delays to traffic and journeys should be planned accordingly, making use of alternative routes where possible.

During initial stages of the scheme Belfast bound traffic will be diverted via the Old Drumahoe Road. During other periods of the work it will be necessary to reduce the existing three lane carriageway to a single lane in each direction. It is further intended to limit the effects on traffic by minimising the length of road affected at any time.

Road closures will be necessary at key stages in the works, with traffic being diverted via Crescent Link, Irish Street, Church Brae and Ardmore Road. These diversions will be in place overnight Saturday evening to 1pm on Sunday only.

Advanced notice of road closures will be published in the local press and advertised on radio stations and on the Roads Service website at www.roadsni.gov.uk. Additionally variable message signing will be in use throughout the period of the contract to give information to drivers.

A temporary 40 mph speed limit will be in place on Altnagelvin Brae for the duration of the work.

Roads Service regrets the inconvenience these necessary works will cause to the travelling public and any disruption that may occur.

Notes to Editors:

1. The scheme is required to complete the resurfacing of this main transport corridor from Dales’s Corner to The Beeches in Drumahoe.
