Roads Service reports on schemes in Craigavon area

Tuesday, 18 May 2010

Transport Minister Conor Murphy welcomed the successful completion of Roads Service's 2009/2010 programme of works and the planned £2.8 million for structural road maintenance in the Craigavon Borough Council area this year.

Speaking ahead of this evening's meeting between Roads Service and Craigavon Borough Council, the Minister said: "A range of local schemes have been delivered successfully by Roads Service in the past year.  While the tightening public expenditure environment in the year ahead will be challenging, Roads Service remains committed to ensure it can make best use of our resources and continue to deliver quality public services."

Improvement schemes carried out in 2009/10 included a major collision remedial scheme on the A3 at Dollingstown Crossroads. This scheme which was completed in early August 2009 provided a roundabout at the junction of Cottage Road, Inn Road and Belfast Road, Dollingstown. Numerous Local Transport and Safety measure schemes were delivered in the Craigavon area in 2009/10. These included visibility improvements on B9 Drumlin Road, Donaghcloney and also on C364 at Clare Crossroads. A new footway link was provided along with carriageway widening on B2 Derrymacash Road junction with Ballynery North Road.

In total 37 kilometres of carriageway were resurfaced, the most significant scheme being the A3 Northway from Seagoe Road to Kernan Loop.

Speaking at the meeting, Roads Service Network Development Manager, Reynold Nicholson welcomed the continued investment in road maintenance, which is helping to rectify the damage caused by the severe conditions last winter.

Roads Service also presented the Council with a programme for local transport and safety measures, which is currently being developed for the area.  These projects, which include provision of a pelican crossing on the Belfast Road, Dollingstown and speed control measures at Mill Hill, Waringstown will be delivered as resources permit.
