16 November 2007 - New busway on M2

A new M2 hard shoulder busway in Belfast becomes operational on Monday 19 November 2007.

It is a temporary measure being introduced for approximately three years during the completion of the M2 widening works.

It will provide time savings for approximately 25 scheduled buses per hour from Derry, Magherafelt, Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine, Templepatrick and Belfast International Airport.

The busway starts approximately 2.2 kilometres North West of Sandyknowes [Junction 4] and buses with more that 28 seats will be permitted to use it between 7.30 am – 9.30 am Monday to Friday.

The status of the busway is indicated on the variable message signs adjacent to the hard shoulder and over-head.

Buses using the hard shoulder will exit the motorway via the off-slip at Sandyknowes and then can re-join the M2 via the on-slip making use of the existing busway.

Drivers are advised that the hard shoulder is still available for use during a breakdown or an emergency situation.

This is the latest addition to Belfast’s existing network of 32 km of bus lane.

Notes to Editors:

  1. This is now the fourth stretch of hard shoulder busway approaching Belfast.
  2. Time savings of approximately 10 minutes are expected per scheduled bus service using the M2 during the morning peak period.
