Progress on £2.7Million investment in Limavady area

Tuesday, 25 November 2008

Regional Development Minister, Conor Murphy, has welcomed Roads Service’s progress on investment totalling £2.7million in the Limavady Council area this year.

Speaking ahead of this evening’s meeting between Roads Service and Limavady Borough Council, the Minister said: “A scheme to provide a right turn facility on the Ballyquin Road at its junction with the Ballyavelin Road is nearing completion. The scheme will also include the provision of a bus lay-by and associated footway to link to the Ardgarvan Cottages.

“Schemes under the ‘Speed Management at Rural Schools’ programme have commenced at St John’s Primary School, Dernaflaw and at St Peter’s and St Paul’s Foreglen. This work includes flashing signs which will operate at times pupils enter or leave the schools, and coloured carriageway surfacing at the signs.

“A £165,000 scheme to realign and widen the Drumacarney Bridge on the Baranailt Road, just south of Limavady is planned for later this financial year.

“Schemes which have already been completed this financial year include a shared use path on the Greystone Road Limavady, between Broad Road and Edenmore Road roundabout, which will facilitate both pedestrians and cyclists.”

At the meeting Road Service’s Divisional Roads Manager, Jim Beattie welcomed the continued investment in local transport and safety measures in the Limavady Council area. These include traffic calming schemes, measures to assist cyclists and pedestrians and a programme of school travel and safety projects.

Mr Beattie said: "Roads Service faces some very significant challenges over the next few years as it deals with the ongoing needs for road maintenance, while progressing a demanding programme of strategic road improvements. We are also contributing to the work being led by the Department of the Environment, on the implementation of decisions arising from the Review of Public Administration, so that changes to our structure or working arrangements can be planned and implemented smoothly.

"Despite these challenges, Roads Service will continue to concentrate on scheme delivery in the Limavady Council area. We will minimise the disruption that will arise from our works and we will give motorists advance warning of road works through signage and information prior to works. There will also be updated information on our website and radio traffic reports,'' added Mr Beattie.
