03 November 2009 - Progress on £7.4million Investmest in Armagh

Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy has welcomed Roads Service’s progress on investment totalling £7.4million in the Armagh area this year.

Speaking ahead of this evening’s meeting between Roads Service and Armagh City and District Council, the Minister said: “Work is progressing well on the three Strategic Route Improvement schemes in the area, with the Edenaveys schemes at Prequalification for tender stage; Armagh North & West Link Road at Specimen Design stage; and Armagh East Link at Preferred Option stage. The delivery of all these schemes will be subject to the availability of finance at the time.

“A major collision remedial scheme on the A27 Tandragee Road at Shortt’s Cross Roads has recently been completed. This scheme provides a roundabout at the junction of the Tandragee Road / Portadown Road / Mullavilly Road and Brackagh Road. The benefits deliver enhanced traffic progression, improves safety and convenience for both motorists and pedestrians."

Southern Division’s Network Maintenance Manager Mr Arnold Hamilton said: “To date, good progress has been made on a diverse range of works across Armagh Council Area this year. These include major resurfacing schemes, along with the provision of a right turning lane on the A3 Portadown Road at Drumilly Road and the B3 Castleblaney Road at Derrynoose. Completion of these schemes has increased safety and significantly improved traffic progression on these busy stretches of carriageway.

“Other works that are ongoing and programmed to be completed this year include improvements at the A29 Rock Road junction, Armagh, as well as traffic calming works on the Granemore Road, Keady.

"The financial position for the next two years will depend on decisions made by Executive. However Roads Service is still planning improvement schemes and welcomes comments from Council on its programmes."
