17 November 2009 - Progress On £3.2million Investment In Limavady

Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy has welcomed Roads Service’s progress on investment totalling £3.2million in the Limavady Borough Council area this year.

Speaking ahead of this evening’s meeting between Roads Service and Limavady Borough Council, the Minister said: “The first of the three stage assessment has been completed for Ballykelly Bypass. The preferred corridor for the proposed dual carriageway was announced in February this year. We are now well into Stage 2 of the process, looking at alternative route options within the chosen southern corridor. My Department plans to complete Stage 2 in determining the ‘preferred route’ option by the end of this year, and an announcement on the ‘preferred route’ is planned for early next year.

“Already completed this year is a £183,000 scheme on the B69 Baranailt Road, which involved the replacement of the Drumacarney Bridge, carriageway realignment and the provision of 70m of safety barrier on either side of the carriageway, spanning the Bessbrook River.

“In addition over 3.5km of carriageway have been resurfaced in the Limavady area including 1.25km of resurfacing at Main Street, Ballykelly and 850m on Scroggy Road, Limavady between Rathmore Road and Greystone Road.

“A number of traffic calming measures and safety related schemes are planned on streets within the Limavady Council area. These measures include new flashing school signs which operate morning and afternoon when pupils enter or leave the school at Drumrane Primary School and Bellarena Primary School. Red surfacing will be laid on the road beside each sign.”

Roads Service Principal Engineer, Malcolm Glover said: “Other works that are planned this financial year include the proposal to improve the junction of Broad Road and Ringsend Road with the provision of a full standard right turning facility. As well as improvements to the visibility sight splays at the junction, the Broad Road will also have minor horizontal improvements.

“It is also proposed to provide a footway on Drumsurn Road, Drumsurn between Fir Avenue and Beech Road. The scheme will also significantly improve the sight visibility splays for traffic exiting Beech Road on to Drumsurn Road.

"The financial position for the next two years will depend on decisions made by The Executive. However Roads Service is still planning improvement schemes and welcomes comments from Council on its programmes."
