18 November 2009 - Progress On £3.9million Investment In North Down

Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy has welcomed Roads Service’s progress on investment totalling £3.9 million in the North Down Council area this year.

Speaking ahead of this evening’s meeting between Roads Service and North Down Borough Council, the Minister said: “I am pleased that further progress has been made on the programme of safety improvements with the installation of pelican crossings on the Gransha Road and Castle Park Avenue in Bangor, along with several street lighting improvement schemes across the Borough.

"Following unprecedented heavy rainfall and associated flooding risks, Roads Service has identified and prioritised a number of drainage improvement schemes to address the threat to property from flooding, safety of the travelling public and the level of inconvenience suffered. During the current year, works have been completed at various locations in Bangor, Helens Bay, Groomsport and Holywood with more planned at other locations in the North Down area."

At the meeting, Road Service’s Divisional Roads Manager, Tom McCourt welcomed the continued investment in local transport and safety measures in the North Down Borough Council area. These include collision remedial schemes, traffic calming schemes, measures to assist cyclists and pedestrians and a programme of school travel and safety projects.

Mr McCourt referred to a range of schemes completed this year plus those nearing completion. These included street lighting schemes at Ballyholme Esplanade, Clandeboye Way/Close/Drive, Sherwood Road/Park/Gardens and Rushfield at Helens Bay. These improvements will further enhance road safety in general and that of pedestrians in particular.

Mr McCourt said: "The financial position for the next two years will depend on decisions made by Executive. However Roads Service is still planning improvement schemes and welcomes comments from Council on its programmes. Roads Service will continue to concentrate on scheme delivery in the North Down Borough Council area. We will minimise the disruption that will arise from our works and we will give motorists advance warning of road works through signage and information prior to works. There will also be updated information on our website and radio traffic reports."
