Speaking ahead of this evening’s meeting between Roads Service and Ballymena Borough Council, the Minister said: “The connection of the M2 Ballymena Bypass underneath the Larne Road Roundabout to the A26 Ballee Road East dual carriageway is progressing well. An unexpected archaeological find, a late Neolithic ring fort, delayed earthmoving; however my Department expects the scheme open to traffic in spring 2010.
“A programme of 12.4km of carriageway resurfacing is nearing completion in the Ballymena area this year, at a cost of £1.3 million, which included 1.5km of resurfacing on the A26 Crankill Road, 2.4km on the B94 Drumagrove Road and 1.6km on the C58 Duneoin Road.
“A number of traffic calming measures and safety related schemes have been completed on streets within the Ballymena Council area. These measures included the combined cycleway/footway on the Galgorm Road, Ballymena from the entrance to Galgorm Hall to the junction of the Old Galgorm Road, and traffic calming measures consisting of traffic islands and central hatching in the village of Martinstown.”
Roads Service Acting Divisional Roads Manager, Deidre Mackle, said: “Other works that are planned this financial year include a 250m footway extension from Omco Industrial Estate out to the GAA playing fields on Woodside Road, and junction visibility sight splay improvements at the B18 Whiteside Road/C48 Slaght Road and at the A36 Moorfields Road/C42 Speerstown Road junction.
"The financial position for the next two years will depend on decisions made by The Executive. However Roads Service is still planning improvement schemes and welcomes comments from Council on its programmes."
