01 October 2009 - Minister publishes Port Master Plan Guidance

Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy, today published guidance on the development of Port Master Plans.

The Minister said: “The commercial ports in the North are vital to the future of our economy. The public consultation on Port Master Plan Guidance undertaken by DRD earlier this year has confirmed that there is an appetite amongst the ports industry and its stakeholders, to engage in long term planning.

“Master planning is about ensuring that the ports can develop as efficient competitive businesses and also fulfil their environmental and community responsibilities.

“The Guidance on Port Master Plans which I have published today, sets out a best practice framework to ensure that an informed and balanced approach is taken to Port development. It will also enable all stakeholders to be properly involved in the development of their local Ports.”

Port Master Plans are designed to set out the ports strategic medium to long term (20-30 years) development plans. Port Master Planning will not be mandatory, however it is likely to be of most value to the major commercial ports in Belfast, Larne, Derry and Warrenpoint.
