27 September 2007 - NI Transport statistics 2006-07 published

The latest edition of the Northern Ireland Transport Statistics containing statistics for 2006-07 is now available.

The publication is produced by the Central Statistics and Research Branch (CSRB) of the Department for Regional Development and contains information on vehicle registrations, driver and vehicle testing, the road network, freight, road safety, public transport, air transport and other transport statistics in Northern Ireland. Key Points

There were 958,677 vehicles licensed in Northern Ireland at 31 December 2006.  Of these, 84% were Private Light Goods (PLG) vehicles.

For PLG vehicles, the most popular most make was Ford, 13% of all PLGs in 2006.

59,738 car ‘Learner’ driving tests were conducted in Northern Ireland during 2006-07, up 7% on the 55,745 tests conducted during 2005-06.

60.8 million tonnes of freight were lifted within Northern Ireland and transported by road by goods vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes in 2006.

The number of road deaths occurring as a result of road collisions fell by 7% from 135 in 2005 to 126 in 2006.

From 2005-06 to 2006-07 the number of passenger journeys on Ulsterbus has remained the same at 43.4 million.  On Citybus this has increased 1% from 23.8 million to 24.1 million.

During 2006-07 there were 8.6 million rail passenger journeys made, which is an increase of 12% from 2005-06.

Belfast International Airport was the 11th busiest commercial airport in the UK in 2006 and accounted for 2% of all UK terminal passengers.

During 2006-07, 802,805 tonnes of petroleum and diesel were delivered for use in Northern Ireland, 6% more than in 2005-06.
