02 September 2009 - Roads Service Announces Resurfacing Work on M1 Motorway

Roads Service today announced plans to start resurfacing work on a section of the M1 Motorway

The resurfacing works are on the westbound section between Junction 9 Moira and Junction 10 Lurgan. The road works will run from 5 to 7 September 2009. These works were previously scheduled for 22 to 24 August, but because of adverse weather conditions the work was not carried out.

Mark McPeak, Roads Service’s Project Manager said: “These essential works will strengthen this section of the M1 so that it can carry today’s very high traffic volumes, provide good skidding resistance, and improve the safety and comfort of road users.

“The works operations and traffic management arrangements have been carefully programmed to minimise inconvenience to the travelling public, local residents and business, however some disruption will be unavoidable.”

Mr McPeak continued: “The work will be restricted to weekend and overnight working. However, some delays will be inevitable and we would ask that motorists be patient as these essential works progress.”

For safety reasons, it will be essential to close the M1 westbound between Junction 9 and Junction 10 at various times throughout the duration of the works, however two lanes will be kept open during most of the day. The full westbound motorway closure details are as follows:

· Saturday 5 September 2009 from 9pm until Sunday 6 September 2009 at 11am.

· Sunday 6 September 2009 from 11pm until Monday 7 September 2009 at 6am (Lane 1 only).

During these closures a diversion route will be signposted via: A3 Lisburn Road through Moira, A3 Lurgan Road through Magheralin and Dollingstown, Queen Street, Malcolm Road, Russell Drive, Sloan Street, Parkview Street, Francis Street Silverwood Road, Kiln Road, Lough Road, Lurgan; J10 onto M1 Westbound.
