01 September 2008 - Bessbrook man convicted of benefit fraud

A man was convicted at Newry Magistrates' Court today for claiming benefits he was not entitled to.

Declan Gerard Mackin (50) of Cloughreagh Park, Bessbrook, failed to declare benefits from the Republic of Ireland while claiming benefits totaling £4,851 during periods of 2004, 2005, and from November 2005 to February 2007. He was given a 12 month conditional discharge.

Mr Mackin is also required to repay the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 301 the number of successful prosecutions this year.
