04 August 2008 - Two convicted of benefit fraud at Newry Court

Two people were convicted at Newry Magistrates’ Court today for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Mark McKevitt (44) of Hill Crescent, Newry, claimed Income Support and Carers Allowance totalling £2,704 while failing to declare he was working. He was given a twelve month conditional discharge and ordered to pay court costs of £67.

Mr McKevitt has repaid in full the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Margaret Blair (51) of Parkhead Crescent, Newry was fined £300 and ordered to pay court costs of £43 for the duplicate encashment of cheques for Income Support totalling £267.

Mrs Blair was also given a Compensation Order for £267.

This brings to 261 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
