05 November 2008 - Six convicted of benefit fraud

Six people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court today for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Stephen Dawson (23) of Woodside Drive, Belfast was given 75 hours community service and ordered to pay £22 court costs for duplicate encashment of Jobseekers Allowance totalling £158.

Jacqueline McBride (38) of Glenbryn Park, Belfast was given 60 hours community service and ordered to pay £34 court costs for living together as husband and wife while claiming Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £21,849

Stephen Braniff (33) of Mizen Gardens, Belfast was given 80 hours community service and ordered to pay £50 court costs for working full-time while claiming Jobseekers Allowance totalling £3,390.

Lillian Clarke (36) of Manor Drive, Belfast was given 80 hours community service and ordered to pay £62 court costs for working full-time while claiming Income Support totalling £9,897.

Kerry Connor (31) of Rosapenna Street, Belfast was given a 12 month probationary order and ordered to pay £28 court costs for working full-time while claiming Housing Benefit totalling £6,740.

Thomas McGinley (55) of Shaws Road, Belfast was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £31 court costs for non disclosure of capital while claiming Jobseekers Allowance totalling £1,491

All are also required to repay the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 434 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
