05 June 2008 - Ritchie launches Volunteer Accolades in Newtownabbey

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie today launched Newtownabbey Borough Council’s Volunteer Accolades Scheme.

Launching the scheme at the council’s offices at Mossley Mill, the minister said; “The Volunteer Accolades scheme is a wonderful opportunity for the people of Newtownabbey borough to acknowledge the local volunteers who have made a difference in their lives. I would urge people to make their nominations and help give their volunteers the recognition they deserve.”

Speaking at the event, taking place during Volunteers Week, Minister Ritchie spoke of the valuable contribution made by volunteers:

“Volunteering has a profound effect on us all; on our children, our families and our friends. It is the lifeblood of our communities. It is often a lifeline to the vulnerable and the disadvantaged. Volunteering is about much more than just helping out. It improves our life chances and enables us all to fulfil our potential.”

The minister also praised the council, who run the Volunteer Accolades Scheme in partnership with Loughside Volunteer Centre and the University of Ulster at Jordanstown. The minister stressed how important it is that the work of volunteers is acknowledged. She said:

“The Volunteer Accolades scheme is an excellent way for Newtownabbey Borough Council to recognise and reward the massive contribution volunteers make to civic society in the borough. It is especially welcome that the work of volunteers is celebrated as part of the council’s 50th anniversary celebrations and I wish them every success with this very worthwhile scheme.”
