10 September 2008 - Eight convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast court

Eight people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Anthony Price (29) of University Street, Belfast was fined £250 for duplicate encashment of Job Seekers Allowance totalling £102.

Anne Crawford (47) of Colinmill, Belfast claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £7,121 while failing to declare she was working full time. She was fined £300.

Sara McMullan (27) of Raffrey Road, Newtownards claimed Income Support totalling £11,179 while failing to declare she was working full time. She was given a four month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Roberta Rowntree (53) of Sandcroft Street, Belfast claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £10,040 while failing to declare she was working full time. She was given a four month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Tracy Erdis (35) of Westland Drive, Belfast claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £11,802 while failing to declare she was working full time. She was given a four month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Laura Dunn (23) of Longlands Road, Newtownabbey claimed Income Support totalling £3,364 while failing to declare she was working full time. She was fined £300.

Kathryn Graham (46) of Ligoneil Road, Belfast claimed Job Seekers Allowance totalling £4,957 while failing to declare she had capital. She was given a twelve month conditional discharge.

Kelly Wilguas (29) of Dhu Varren Park, Belfast claimed Income Support totalling £1,716 while failing to declare she was working full time. She was fined £250.

All eight are also required to repay the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 327 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
