10 June 2009 - Eleven people convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast court

Eleven people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Stacey O’Neill (20) of Queens Parade, Belfast was given a £250 fine and ordered to pay £22 court costs for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £63.

Alan Dougan (27) of Vernon Court, Belfast was given 100 hours community service and ordered to pay £22 court costs for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £563.

David Nesbitt (46) of Ainsworth Avenue, Belfast was given 100 hours community service and ordered to pay £44 court costs for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £43.

Geraldine Hegarty (44) of Cliftonpark Avenue, Belfast was given a 12 month probation order and ordered to pay £22 court costs for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £203.

Martin O’Callaghan (27) of Lagmore Meadows, Dunmurry was given a £300 fine and ordered to pay £31 court costs for failure to declare employment while claiming Jobseekers Allowance totalling £531.

Elizabeth McFall (47) of Friendly Street, Belfast was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £34 court costs for non disclosure of capital while claiming Income Support totalling £16,426.

Damien Clarke (29) of Ballymurphy Drive, Belfast was given 100 hours community service and ordered to pay £34 court costs for failure to declare employment while claiming Income Support and Incapacity Benefit totalling £2,826.

Elizabeth McCarthy (41) of Monagh Road, Belfast was given a £300 fine and ordered to pay £43 court costs for failure to declare employment while claiming Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £3,944.

John Hume (50) of Liscoole Park, Newtownabbey was given a £250 fine and ordered to pay £25 court costs for failure to declare capital while claiming Jobseekers Allowance totalling £2,463.

Anne Nicholson (30) of Bawnmore Park, Newtownabbey was given a £300 fine and ordered to pay £37 court costs for failure to declare employment while claiming Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £5,099.

Roland Rankin (55) of Claremont Court, Belfast was given a £300 fine and ordered to pay £37 court costs for failure to declare capital while claiming Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £4,492. A Compensation Order of £4,492 was awarded against him.

All are also required to repay the money they wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 206 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
