The Minister was in the city on a number of engagements and called into the Caw Nelson Drive to kick start the wide range of programmes and activities the funding will be used for.
Margaret Ritchie said: "It is rewarding to see at first hand the good work that is being delivered to regenerate this estate. This pilot programme focuses on building social cohesion and confidence within communities to help address issues such as inter and intra community conflict. It is very much grounded in the community tackling sensitive and complex issues that are having a serious and detrimental impact on the lives of people living in this estate. It is an invaluable resource and one which I am committed to wholly supporting."
In addition to a luncheon club running three times a week for seniors, the funding will enable youth programmes, intergenerational events, parenting courses, IT courses and history classes to be offered to everyone in the community.
In conclusion Margaret Ritchie said: “This area is a wonderful example of a more confident and cohesive community as a result of the positive working relationships by the many people and organisations who reside here. The Caw Nelson Drive Action Group and Caw 2000 deserve particular praise in their efforts to date."
