Ritchie launches £0.5million revamp for Warrenpoint

Friday, 19 June 2009

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA today launched the new look Queen Street area of Warrenpoint after the completion of a £521,000 improvement scheme.

The scheme implemented by the Department’s Regional Development Office, in partnership with Newry & Mourne District Council, included upgrading of footpaths, improved street lighting and new street furniture.

Margaret Ritchie said “This is good news for the people of Warrenpoint. By improving the physical appearance of the town centre I hope we can stimulate private sector investment, capitalise on the tourist potential and perhaps most importantly ensure that the people who live here enjoy a shared future in a beautiful setting. The natural environment is matchless, so it is only fitting that the urban environment should strive to complement it.”

“My Department’s investment of £500,000 in improvements to Queen Street is a small step towards regeneration of the town and recent investment by local businesses and the Harbour Authority have convinced me that there is a bright future ahead for Warrenpoint.”

Mayor of Newry & Mourne District Council, Councillor John Feehan said: “The project will be a good boost for Warrenpoint town centre particularly in the current economic climate. The entire community will benefit including the businesses, residents and tourists.”

Councillor Karen McKevitt, Chairperson of the Council’s District Development Committee said: “It has been refreshing taking the partnership approach involving all key organisations to implement a much needed scheme for the area. The final result is pleasing to all involved in the process."
