The LILAC centre offers help and support using complimentary therapies and the funding will be used to provide new equipment for complimentary therapies including aromatherapy and reflexology.
Making the announcement the Social Development Minister, Margaret Ritchie said: “I am pleased to support this project for residents in Coalisland who are encountering difficult circumstances. Poor health is one of the most important and difficult issues that the Neighbourhood Renewal process must address.
"The implementation of this project, through the Armagh and Dungannon Health Action Zone, demonstrates my commitment to work in partnership with others to achieve improvements in the health and well being of people living in the Coalisland Neighbourhood Renewal Area.”
Through Neighbourhood Renewal a project has been devised to enhance the service being provided and to carry out a review of the effectiveness of complimentary type therapies.
The Minister also acknowledged the work of the Coalisland Neighbourhood Partnership: She said: “I wish to express my appreciation of the efforts of members of Coalisland Neighbourhood Partnership who, in a relatively short period of time, have made considerable progress on delivering a range of significant projects in their Neighbourhood Renewal Area. The support of the Partnership is necessary to achieve effective change and I look forward to further developments in Coalisland”
The involvement of the Armagh and Dungannon Health Action Zone gives the project a total value of £28,245.00.
A review of complimentary services will also be carried out by McMillan Cancer Care.
Notes to Editors:
1. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy ‘People and Place’ was published in June 2003 to close the gap between the quality of life for people in the most deprived neighbourhoods and the rest of society. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy has four interlinking strategic objectives.
- Community Renewal – to develop confident communities that are able and committed to improving the quality of life in their areas.
- Economic Renewal – to develop economic activity in the most deprived neighbourhoods and connect them to the wider urban economy.
- Social Renewal – to improve social conditions for the people who live in the most deprived neighbourhoods through better co-ordinated public services and the creation of safer environments.
- Physical Renewal – to help create attractive, safe and sustainable environments in the most deprived neighbourhoods.
2. The Coalisland Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership is one of those funded by DSD.
