24 June 2009 - Three convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast court

Three people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Geraldine O’Connor (50) of Cromacwood Court, Belfast claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £8,537 while failing to declare employment. She was given 75 hours community service and ordered to pay £37 court costs.

Donna Marie McIlhatton (43) of Ramdan Gardens, Belfast claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £7,542 while failing to declare employment. She was given 80 hours community service and ordered to pay £68 court costs.

Stephen Adams (49) of Beechwood Street, Belfast claimed Income Support and Rate Arrears totalling £6,886 while failing to declare employment. He was given 80 hours community service and ordered to pay £46 court costs.

All are required to repay the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 229 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
