25 September 2008 - Minister Ritchie opens new housing scheme for Dunmurry homeless

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA today opened a new £2.7m housing scheme for homeless people at Cloverhill in Dunmurry.

The scheme of 18 self contained apartments is a partnership between BIH Housing Association and Depaul Trust. BIH Housing Association provided the new accommodation, with grant aid from the Department for Social Development, with Depaul Trust providing day-to-day management. The accommodation aims to give temporary respite and support to families who find themselves homeless for whatever reason.

After touring the building and meeting residents, the minister said: “Not having a home, for whatever reason, is a traumatic event in anyone’s life. This new development and the extensive support services provided by Depaul Trust, will provide the space and capacity required for families to get back on their feet.

“My New Housing Agenda, which was launched in February, is all about delivering opportunity and choice for those who need it most. My focus is on the most vulnerable members of our society and I want to do all I can to ensure that they have the same opportunities as the rest of the community. This latest addition to the supported housing sector is a practical and tangible example of this aspiration.

“These 18 apartments, built with £2.7m provided by my department, are a significant contribution to the provision of modern, appropriate temporary accommodation for homeless households in this area.”

To mark the opening, the event concluded with the Minister unveiling a commemorative plaque.
