26 May 2009 - Ritchie announces funding for children's sensory garden in Omagh

Social Development, Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA, today announced a funding boost of over £31,000 from her Department's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund for Omagh.

The funding will build an ‘Outdoor Sensory Adventure Garden’ that will benefit children and their parents within the local area. It will provide children with the opportunity to explore and build upon their physical, emotional, and intellectual development.

Margaret Ritchie said: “This project will provide real and significant benefits to the children and parents of Omagh Neighbourhood Renewal Area.”

“I met with representatives of the local statutory and community associations when I visited the Omagh area recently and was impressed with their dedication. I am now pleased to help support them in the Neighbourhood Renewal process by providing funding of over £31,000. This money will provide a unique and invaluable sensory adventure garden for the children in Omagh.”

The project was raised as a priority through research and consultation carried out by Sure Start in Omagh Neighbourhood Renewal area. It will also be implemented and managed by Sure Start.

Notes to Editors:

1. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy ‘People and Place’ was published in June 2003 to close the gap between the quality of life for people in the most deprived neighbourhoods and the rest of society. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy has four interlinking strategic objectives.

  • Community Renewal – to develop confident communities that are able and committed to improving the quality of life in their areas.
  • Economic Renewal – to develop economic activity in the most deprived neighbourhoods and connect them to the wider urban economy.
  • Social Renewal – to improve social conditions for the people who live in the most deprived neighbourhoods through better co-ordinated public services and the creation of safer environments.
  • Physical Renewal – to help create attractive, safe and sustainable environments in the most deprived neighbourhoods.
