28 May 2009 - Ritchie pledges £150,000 to extend 'Restore' initiative for Belfast

Social Development Minister, Margaret Ritchie, MLA today announced the extension of the recently launched ’reStore’ initiative to the Smithfield and Library Quarter area.

The initiative which aims to boost business performance in rundown areas within the city by creating a more attractive environment for shoppers and visitors was given a further £150,000 funding injection.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Margaret Ritchie said: “I am pleased to offer immediate support of £150,000 under the pilot ‘reStore’ initiative to traders currently operating in the Smithfield and Library Quarter areas in the Northside. The North West City Centre Regeneration Committee, a body which represents the interests of local businesses, has provided their time and know-how to develop an action plan under the banner “The Historic Smithfield and Library Quarter – the revival initiative.

“The funding provided by my Department will support the development of a unique brand for the area, enhancements to shop fronts, streetscape improvements and a series of promotional events to entice more visitors and shoppers into the area.”

Notes to Editors:

1. Within Belfast City Centre the pilot programme is being implemented on a partnership basis, involving DSD, the local business community and Belfast City Centre Management.

2. The initial pilot for the Greater Castle Street area was launched in December 2008 providing £150,000 funding. The extended pilot now includes the Smithfield and Library Quarter areas with a further £150,000 funding commitment.

3. The ‘reStore’ pilot broadly mirrors the ‘reStore DC’ programme, which Ms Ritchie viewed during her visit to Washington DC in June 07. The reStore DC programme supports the revitalisation of Washington DC’s neighbourhood commercial districts and small businesses by:

  • providing technical and funding assistance in targeted neighbourhoods to retain DC businesses, design and improve storefronts and streetscapes, and promote DC’s business neighbourhood districts; and
  • building the capacity of neighbourhood non-profit organisations to assist businesses and coordinate sustainable community-driven revitalisation efforts.
