29 April 2009 - Ritchie addresses joint forum on the impact of recession

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA today addressed a meeting of the Joint Government and Voluntary and Community Sector Forum.

The Minister highlighted the need for strong and strategic leadership in the sector during this time of economic hardship.

She said: “I want to congratulate the voluntary and community sector for their determination and resilience in continuing to provide much needed services to the community during this unprecedented economic downturn.

"The importance of the role of the voluntary and community sector is clearly recognised within the Executive. As Minister with lead responsibility for the voluntary and community sector my vision is for a vibrant sector that provides a voice for the disadvantaged in society, helps to provide services to communities, strives to be lean and fit for purpose and continues to innovate and professionalise – indeed a modern sector for a modern age.

"To help achieve this vision my officials and representatives from the voluntary and community sector have been reviewing the existing framework for relationships and responsibilities between Government and the sector.

"My department is also finalising new strategies for Volunteering and Advice Service provision and these together with the Modernisation Fund assistance currently being provided will significantly improve the voluntary and community sector landscape.”
