30 September 2008 - Seven Belfast people convicted of benefit fraud

Seven people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court today for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Eamon Mckee (20) of Beechmount Grove, was fined £250 and ordered to pay £22 court costs for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £120.

Alan Dougan (26) of Vernon Court, was fined £350 and ordered to pay court costs of £25 for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £738.

Gareth Vannan (36) of Lyndhurst Gardens, was fined £200 and ordered to pay court costs of £44 for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £260.

Natalie Fleming (23) of Forthriver Drive, was fined £200 and ordered to pay court costs of £22 for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £322.

William Babb (35) of Tower Street, claimed Jobseekers’ Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £1,121 while working full time. He was fined £200, ordered to pay court costs of £112 and given a Compensation Order for £1,121.

Barbara Orr (24) of Florence Square, claimed Jobseekers’ Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £3,034 while working full time. She was fined £320.

Mary McEvoy (47) of Upper Meadow Street, claimed Income Support totalling £2,257 while failing to declare she had capital. She was given 80 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs of £40.

All seven are required to repay the money they wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 369 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
