17 April 2009 - Four convicted of benefit fraud

Four people were convicted at Londonderry Magistrates' Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Patrick Toland (34) of Corrody Road, Londonderry was fined £250 and ordered to pay court costs of £61 for wrongful encashment of Job Seekers Allowance and New Deal totalling £231.

David McLaughlin (30) of Celadine Court, Londonderry was fined £100 and ordered to pay court costs of £40 for wrongful encashment of Social Fund totalling £119.

Sean Morrison (39) of Oakfield Mews, Londonderry was fined £200 and ordered to pay court costs of £73 for failure to declare employment while claiming Job Seekers Allowance totalling £2,094.

Jennifer Herron (43) of Windmill View, Londonderry was fined £600 and ordered to pay court costs of £55 for failure to declare capital while claiming Housing Benefit totalling £19,632.

All are also required to repay the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 136 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
