29 April 2009 - Three convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast court

Three people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Carrie Anne Biggerstaff (24) of Blackwood Street, Belfast was fined £300 for failing to declare employment while claiming Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £4,064.

Janice Scott (46) of Cypress Place, Carrickfergus was given 100 hours community service and ordered to pay £34 court costs for failure to declare employment while claiming Income Support totalling £15,913.

Richard Leeman (48) of St Leonard's Crescent, Belfast was given a four month sentence suspended for two years, fined £300 and ordered to pay £46 court costs for failure to declare employment while claiming Income Support, Incapacity Benefit and Housing Benefit totalling £4,555.

All are also required to repay the money they wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 154 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
