13 August 2007 - Minister's pride to be in Derry

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie officially opened the Foyle Pride festival in Derry this evening.

Events got underway in the City Hotel before moving on to Pepe’s Bar on the Strand Road. During the week there will be a programme of events culminating in the Big Pride Finale on 18th August.

The organisers have adopted the theme of Inclusion and Human Rights for the week-long festival.

Speaking at the official opening, the Minister said: “Discrimination or harassment on the grounds of a person’s sexual orientation is simply wrong; it is unacceptable and must not be tolerated.”

In declaring the festival officially open, the Minister paid tribute to the work of the Voluntary and Community Sector across the North and in particular thanked the Rainbow Project in Derry for their contribution in bringing the Pride Festival back to the City after a five year absence.
