28 August 2007 - Five Belfast people convicted of benefit fraud

Four men and a women were sentenced on benefit fraud charges at Belfast Magistrates’ Court today.

Trevor Scott (56), of Skegoneill Avenue, was given 150 hours community service for claiming £18,601 in Jobseekers’ Allowance without declaring that he had capital.

Karen Buchanan (47), of Norfolk Drive, was given a conditional discharge for falsely claiming £14,433 in Income Support without disclosing that she had capital.

Thomas Hughes (53), of Stockmans Avenue, was fined £200 for claiming £117 in Income Support whilst working.

Brendan Campbell (21), was fined £250 for duplicate encashment of Jobseekers’ Allowance to a total value of £599.

Albert Morton (61), of Orby Drive, was fined £250 for claiming a total of £2,192 in Income Support and Housing Benefit without disclosing that he had savings.

All five are required by the Social Security Agency to repay the money that they wrongfully obtained. These cases bring the total of successful prosecutions this year to 246.
