28 August 2008 - Two convicted of benefit fraud at Craigavon court

Two people were convicted at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Vincent McAlinden (60) of Ardmore Road, Lurgan, was fined £250 and ordered to pay court costs of £37 for claiming Income Support totalling £1,871 while failing to declare he was working full time, from September 2005 to April 2006.

Niall McCann (21) of Edward Street, Lurgan, was given 120 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs of £19 for wrongful encashment of Income Support totalling £512, during August 2006 to November 2006.

Both are also required to repay the money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 296 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
