Planning approval sought for development of Curran Street, Portadown
Tuesday, 8 December 2009Social Development Minister, Margaret Ritchie MLA has announced that her Department has submitted a planning application for the development of the Curran Street site in Portadown.
The development proposal includes 36 mixed tenure residential houses and some supporting neighbourhood retail and office accommodation.
In announcing the progress in the scheme’s development, Margaret Ritchie said: "The regeneration of the Curran Street site offers a unique opportunity to regenerate a corner of Portadown that has been derelict for many years. This will be a major boost for the town; providing much needed housing and business space for local people and helping to create jobs in this area of need.
"My Department has been working diligently with local North West Portadown Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership, Portadown 2000, Craigavon Borough Council and other government bodies to assess how the site can be regenerated. We are committed to setting out a powerful vision for urban regeneration and economic development across Northern Ireland and Portadown is part of that vision.
"The public consultation period has now ended with the majority of people giving full support for the design proposals. The development plans have been formally submitted to the Planning Service and my Department will continue to work closely with the consultants to prepare a development brief, with the intention of going out to the market in the New Year."
