29 February 2008 - Two convicted of benefit fraud at Lisburn court

Two men were convicted at Lisburn Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Michael Lyness (40), of Ivan Street, claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £7,862 while failing to declare he was working. He was given a three month prison sentence suspended for two years and ordered to pay court costs of £34.

James McClelland (62), of Riverdale House, Ballybog Road, claimed Housing Benefit totalling £10,266 while failing to declare he was in receipt of an Occupational Pension. He was given a two month prison sentence suspended for twelve months.

Both are required to repay the money they wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 80 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
