Margaret Ritchie opens new housing scheme for homeless people

Thursday, 19 July 2007

A new £3million housing scheme for homeless people in west Belfast was opened today by Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA.

The scheme of 24 self contained apartments is a partnership between Oaklee Housing Association and the Simon Community. Oaklee Housing Association provided the new accommodation with grant aid from the Department for Social Development with the Simon Community providing day to day management.

After touring the building and meeting residents, the Minister said: "Not having a home is one of the worst things that can happen to people but I am determined to tackle this important issue. Last week I launched a new Strategy which brings together all appropriate Government departments, agencies and the voluntary sector. My vision is to dramatically reduce the number of homeless people in Northern Ireland. Today we see this vision can be made a reality through the provision of first class accommodation such as these apartments.

“My Department provided the £3million funding that enabled these apartments to be built but a home is more that just bricks and mortar - it is a place where people live. What is more important is the quality of life that these homes will provide. Residents at last will have a roof over their heads and will be able to live in dignity and in privacy, when perhaps they need it most. I very much hope that you all find a ‘home from home’ during your time here.

“These 24 apartments are a significant contribution to the provision of modern, appropriate temporary accommodation for homeless households in Belfast. They are also important in helping the regeneration of this part of west Belfast.”

To mark the opening, the event concluded with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
