28 July 2009 - Ritchie launches £13million housing scheme in north Belfast

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA, today officially cut the first sod to launch 112 new family homes at Torrens in North Belfast.

The development, by Fold Housing Association, will incorporate the very latest in energy saving, design and security features. It is the third phase of the Torrens development which, when complete, will see a total of 166 family houses by Fold Housing Association in an area of high housing need. Redundant housing and the former Finniston Primary School have been demolished to make way for the new three and four bedroom houses and two bedroom apartments.

The scheme will cost nearly £13million, with the Department for Social Development providing £9.8million through the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. The balance of £3 million will be funded by Fold Housing Association through private financing.

Speaking at the launch, Margaret Ritchie said: “I am pleased to see construction of this third phase get underway in Torrens. Fold Housing Association has already completed over 50 houses on adjacent sites and these latest additions will be most welcome in an area of high housing need. I am pleased that my Department, working alongside the Housing Executive and the local community, has been able to bring this very significant scheme to fruition.

“The delivery of more energy efficient, sustainable social housing is the number one priority in the New Housing Agenda. I am determined to do all I can to help people off the waiting list and these 112 houses will be a valuable contribution to the 1750 new homes planned for this financial year.”

Construction by Braidwater Construction has just got underway, with completion planned for March 2011.
