31 July 2009 - Ritchie opens rural ECO homes at Annaclone

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA, today officially opened a new £2million rural social housing scheme at Millvale Close, Annaclone.

The development by Rural Housing Association, beautifully situated in the centre of the village, comprises 12 new three and five bedroom family homes. The homes have been designed to Eco Homes ‘Good’ standard, which ensures a high level of energy efficiency. Solar roof panels have been included to cut down on heating costs. All are built to Lifetime Homes standard and in addition incorporate a full range of security features.

After touring the scheme the Minister said: “This is a major boost for people on the waiting list in Annaclone. As Minister I have sought to ensure that our tenants have the best social housing throughout these islands and these new homes are second to none.

“This new family accommodation means that local people with young families and aspirations for the future can stay local and help maintain and sustain this growing community. This latest development can be very much viewed as part of my Department’s ongoing commitment to the sustainability of rural districts.

“Rural Housing Association and the Housing Executive are to be commended for putting together a high quality package which is so clearly welcomed by the local community.”

The 12 unit scheme cost approximately £2million, including land, construction costs and associated costs. The Department for Social Development funded £1.4million through the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, with the balance of £0.5million contributed by Rural Housing Association through private financing.
